Frequently Asked Questions
New around here? Start with the basics.
Serve2Gether Consulting+ is a skills based volunteering program where colleagues have an opportunity to donate their professional skills through virtual projects that provide critical, capacity-building support for nonprofit organizations. These meaningful volunteer projects enable colleagues to use their core competencies and specialized skills in a different environment to deliver valuable support to a nonprofit in need.
The program is open all American Express colleagues globally.
Colleagues who plan on participating in Serve2Gether Consulting+ should have a discussion with their manager about whether or not it is acceptable to participate during work hours.
Yes, colleagues must secure their manager’s approval prior to participating in any volunteer activity that occurs during work hours, even if the event is company-sponsored.
Visit https://amex.catchafire.org/ to complete your volunteer profile. Once you have created a profile and registered to the site, you can search for available projects or one-hour phone consultations by filtering based on your skills and cause areas of interest. Recommendations will also be sent to you via email. If you match with a project, there will be a mutual interview between you and the non-profit to ensure the right fit.
If you need help deciding if a project is right for you, feel free to email Catchafire at [email protected].
Each project varies in size, but the average project represents a 1-50 hour commitment over the course of two to three months. Nonprofits develop their project requirements through the predesigned project templates and the process is scoped out and supported to ensure a positive experience for both colleagues and nonprofits. Project examples include but are not limited to creating a marketing strategy, writing an annual report or designing a talent recruitment strategy.
An opportunity for colleagues to volunteer just one hour by sharing their expertise via phone with a nonprofit that has posted a question or challenge on the Serve2Gether Consulting+ volunteer platform. A phone consultation is a great way to start volunteering with Serve2Gether Consulting+!
If there are volunteer opportunities available in your region, you'll have the option to filter by location. However, since all Catchafire engagements are meant to be completed virtually, we encourage you to focus on finding projects that best fit your skills & interests, regardless of location.
Each project varies in size, but the average project represents a 1- 50 hour commitment over the course of two to three months. Volunteers are encouraged to work with the nonprofit to develop an agreed-upon implementation schedule and align on deadlines during the interview and planning stage. This ensures that all parties are clear from the outset - it is important to be realistic about the time available to dedicate to this work.
Yes, if you are confident of managing several work plans and deadlines, but it is recommended that colleagues start out by doing one project for their first experience.
Yes, just decide who you would like to work with at American Express, and once you have their commitment, determine which one of you will act as the project lead – that is the person that will go through the application process on the Serve2Gether Consulting+ volunteer platform. Please include the member(s) of your team in your application to the nonprofit’s project, and ensure that all members of your team will be able to attend any interview that may occur once you have submitted your application.
The nonprofit will review your application and may invite you to participate in a phone interview if they think it will be a good fit. If so, you will be contacted by Catchafire to schedule the call. Nonprofits are encouraged to decide promptly, but there is no set timeline for when they will reply.
After the interview, you can log into your account dashboard and ACCEPT or PASS on the match. Once both parties accept, you are officially matched and can begin the project. If you need to exchange any materials or have follow-up conversations to determine if it is a good fit after the interview, you are encouraged to do so. Your whole matching experience is guided from first applying to post-match.
Yes, colleagues may nominate nonprofits with which they have a strong relationship to be included in the Serve2Gether Consulting+ volunteer program by filling out this form - http://bit.ly/amex_catchafire. Catchafire is committed to making sure everyone who wants to volunteer their skills can do so. If you are having trouble finding a project that fits, feel free to contact Catchafire at [email protected] for help.
